Edited by: Hippy Dave on 04/02/2008 04:24:26 Gotta say as someone who played eve early on (3+ years ago) before any major updates the game is much easier and more interesting for people interested in non pvp activities.
When i played before missions basically didnt exist (they did but they were uber crap) if you werent into pvp ratting and mining was about the only things you could do.
Now im not into pvp atm, my character is to crap to be bothered with it, eventually i intend to get involved but until then its a case of keeping yourself safe, not expecting the game to babysit your every move. High sec space is only an indication of relative threat, the real stat to look at imo is player traffic. If you are flying a crappy freighter with a few mill of isk in goods in your belly through a 1.0 system check how many players are in space, how many ships/pods have been destroyed, always warp to 0 and never use autopilot and you should be fine for the most part (although i wouldnt recomend doing the above ever personally)
I fly in mainly 0.8 to 0.4 systems atm and have never been ganked or pirated in any way, the rare occasions i do have valuable cargo i make sure i can carry it in my cruiser with shield tanking and that the players in space numbers are low. Now eventually by law of averages i will get popped open by someone but hey thats life, its what makes eve more exciting to play knowing there is real risk out there.
Im no guru by any means, in fact im pretty much a noob, but just excercising common sense has kept me safe this long. Oh and joining an organised and helpful corp will help you as well, and if you are a hauler learn to fly the big industrials which are much harder to suicide gank (from what ive been told)
Seriously if you think its harsh now you should have played when mOo used to gate camp 1.0 space and take on concord :)
I think eve now is almost perfectly balanced, there is enough pve pursuits to keep most happy but the focus is still player run corps and content, eve is a sandbox game after all (imo)
